The event is sponsored by the Alliance to Cure Cavernous Malformations (angioma.org) and is a morale boost for our CCM patients and their families to see themselves represented.
Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM) affect three million Americans, predisposing them to a lifetime risk of bleeding, seizures and neurologic sequelae. The University of Chicago Medicine (UCM) includes the nation's leading clinical and research team serving patients with CCM. It is the U.S.'s first accredited CCM Center of Excellence, and the only one in Illinois and multistate region, with specialists addressing every aspect of the disease. The Center of Excellence has led the most extensive research on CCM in the past decade, including biomarker discoveries, treatment targets and first-in-disease clinical trials, in addition to unmatched clinical and surgical expertise. The Center (uchicagomedicine.org/ccm) is led by Issam Awad, MD, the John Harper Seeley Professor of Neurological Surgery and leading CCM surgeon and researcher and welcomes patients from throughout the region and country.
